About University of Detroit Mercy

The University of Detroit, commonly known as UDM, is a comprehensive university in Detroit, which is a city located in the US State of Michigan that developed from a small French fort and missionary outpost founded in 1701, being one of the oldest cities in the Midwest. The city experienced a devastating fire, back in 1805, which almost destroyed the entire city, leaving behind only a few evidences of what the city looked like in the 17th and 18th centuries, but managed to pull through, presenting itself as the beautiful city that we know today.

UDM traces its origins back in 1877, when it was founded by the Society of Jesus as Detroit College and expanding over the years into the University of Detroit, establishing a second campus, in 1927. The University of Detroit Mercy was born in 1990, when the University of Detroit and Mercy College of Detroit merged.

Today, UDM is known as the largest Roman Catholic University in Michigan, also being one of the 28 members of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in the United States, and according to the US News & World Report, it is among `America’s Best Colleges` (2009). The university offers its students more than 100 academic degrees and study programs, including dentistry, engineering, liberal arts and architecture.

Athletically, UDM sponsors 19 varsity sports, and it is represented by the Detroit Titans, who compete in the NCAA Division I’s Horizon League, and who are best known for their achievements in basketball. Since ’96-’97, the Titans have won a total of 14 league championships, including the 2007 Horizon League championship in men’s golf.
